KILIMANJARO GENERAL INFORMATION
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa (19,340 feet or 5,895metres above sea level). Although only 330 kms south of the Equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania, its location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height, strongly influence the climate and this its vegetation, animal life and the climbing conditions. It is composed of three extinct volcanoes, Kibo 19, 340 ft (5,895 metres), Mawenzi 16, 896 ft (5,149 metres), and Shira 13,000 ft (3,962 metres). It is also one of the world’s highest free-standing mountains. To assist with your preparations we have compiled the following information dossier, which we hope you will find helpful.
Kilimanjaro Climb: Foot Travel operate the best private climbs and charity treks up Mt Kilimanjaro with experienced guides, good food and good equipment. They are responsible for our Kilimanjaro Climbs. The easiest and most popular route up Kilimanjaro is the Marangu Route (aka "the coca cola route ") Rongai Route. Machame/Mweka route is the preferred one. Five days/four nights on the mountain is the recommended minimum time, also you can choose Lemosho/Londorosi, Umbwe Route (aka whisk route). Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain (i.e. distance from the bottom of the mountain to the top) in the world.
Kilimanjaro is as high as you can go without requiring oxygen or specialist technical mountaineering skills.
Kilimanjaro is located in Northern Tanzania, bordering Kenya, in East Africa.
Kilimanjaro has six different, non-technical routes up the mountain that take between five and eight days, not including rest days. These routes are Marangu route (Five or Six days), Machame route (Six or Seven days), Lemosho route (Eight days), and Rongai route (Five or Six days), Shira route (Seven days) and Umbwe route (Five or Six days).
Kilimanjaro has camping routes include Machame, Shira, and Rongai, and one route (Marangu) with hut accommodation provided by the National Parks.

Climbs normally include a night at a hotel at the beginning and the end of a climb.
There are 4 nights on the mountain. An extra night can be included if you feel you need acclimatizing.
Avoid the months of heavy rains during November and early December, and April and May.
Children under ten are not usually permitted to go above 12,000feet/3,000m.
which is also the limit for adults with a cold, cough, sore throat or above normal temperature.
In the interests of safety, the guide has the right to stop a climber from continuing.
For those who feel they will be troubled by mountain sickness, it is recommended to have at least five nights on the mountain.
Climbs can start on any date. The Marangu and Machame routes normally take five days/four nights.
We suggest that for those who are not used to high latitude or to mountaineering to spend an
extra night at about 12,000 ft / 3800 metres to acclimatize.
Arusha National Park
Size: 542 sq km (205.96 sq miles).
Location: Northern Tanzania, Northeast of Arusha town.
Arusha National Park, often overlooked, is in fact a treasure, rich tapestry of habitats, teeming with animals and birds. From the lush swamps of the Ngurdoto Crater to the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes and the rocky alpine heights of Mt Meru, the terrain of the park as varied as it is interesting. Zebras graze on the park’s red grassland, and leopards lurk next to waterfalls in the shadowy forest. More than 400 species of bird, both migrant and resident, can be found in Arusha National Park alongside rare primates such as the black-and-white colobus monkey.
Today your driver will take you to Arusha National Park. Lying between the peaks of Mt.Kilimanjaro and Meru. Arusha National Park is an outstandingly beautiful area. The Park has wide range of habitat, from the string of crater lakes where many water birds can be Watched, through the highland montane forest and on up to the imposing summit of Mt. Meru walk in the park with an armed ranger and mountain guide for acclimatization. The forest contains a wealth of birds and other animals, like the beautiful bushbuck easily Glimpsed in the glades between the ancient cedar trees, or the black and white colombus Monkeys climbing along their branches. The interesting geology of the area is reflected in the impressive view of the ash cone and cliff face leading to the summit of Mt. Meru. You will drive back to your lodge.
